Chemical peel aftercare: first 7 days of care

If you remember one rule for chemical peel aftercare, make it this: keep your skin calm and protected from the sun for the first 48 to 72 hours. I’ve worked with reactive skin, including rosacea, and I’ve seen how an enzyme facial can leave skin looking even and clear when you don’t overheat it, over-scrub it, or “test” it with strong products too soon. In Denver, our altitude and dry air make that protection even more important.
The first 24 to 48 hours: cool skin, clean hands, no “extra”
Right after your Chemical Peel/Enzyme Peel (it’s a quick service at 10 minutes), your goal is simple: reduce irritation so your skin can do its repair work. I generally recommend you treat your face like it’s temporarily sensitive, even if you feel fine.
Quick rule of thumb: If it makes you hot, red, or stingy, skip it for 48 to 72 hours.
What I want you doing
- Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and a mild, non-fragranced cleanser.
- Moisturize with a simple, fragrance-free moisturizer. Think “bland and comforting, ” not active and tingly.
- Apply mineral SPF 30+ every morning, even if it’s cloudy. Reapply if you’re outside.
- Keep hands off your face. Clean hands matter more than people think during peel week.
What I want you avoiding
- Sweating and heat: hard workouts, hot yoga, saunas, steam rooms, and hot baths for 48 to 72 hours. If you’re asking “can I exercise after chemical peel, ” the safe answer is usually light movement only until your skin feels settled.
- Pools and chlorine for 48 to 72 hours.
- Actives for at least 1 week: retinol, AHAs/BHAs, strong vitamin C, scrubs, exfoliating brushes, and at-home peels.
- Waxing or aggressive hair removal on freshly treated skin.
Days 3 to 7: peeling is normal, picking is not
A lot of people get nervous when they see dryness or flaking and immediately want to exfoliate it off. Don’t. That’s how you turn a normal peel into irritation.
What you’ll usually notice
- Enzyme peel aftercare tends to be calmer, with more “tight and dry” than full-on sheets of peeling.
- Chemical peel aftercare can include visible flaking. Some people start around day 2 to 3, and it often calms down by the end of the week.
- Your skin may look brighter and more even as the week goes on. That’s the goal for concerns like acne, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines.
If you’ve got weekend plans and you need discreet recovery, plan on a very gentle routine and be cautious with makeup for the first couple of days. I see the best “work-friendly” peel weeks when you let the skin do its thing and focus on moisture plus sunscreen.
And because we’re in Denver, I want you thinking about two things all week: dryness and UV. High altitude sun can sneak up on you, even during a quick walk around City Park.
Product types that protect your peel result (without guessing)
I keep aftercare simple on purpose. Fancy routines are usually where people get into trouble, especially if you searched “skin treatment near me” or “peels near me” because you want results fast.
Stick to these for the first week
- Gentle cleanser: no acids, no exfoliating beads, no strong fragrance.
- Barrier moisturizer: fragrance-free, focused on comfort and hydration.
- Mineral sunscreen SPF 30+: physical blockers are usually the easiest on post-peel skin.
Hold off on these until I clear you
- Retinoids, glycolic/lactic/salicylic acids, strong brightening serums, and at-home exfoliation.
- New products you haven’t used before. Peel week is not the week to experiment.
Small habit that helps a lot: Keep your showers warm, not hot. Heat plus Denver dryness is a rough combo on freshly treated skin.
When to text me: normal peel symptoms vs a red flag
I’m big on education and comfort, because it’s the difference between “I think I ruined my face” and “I know what’s normal.” People tell me they feel completely comfortable from the moment they walk in, and that’s the same energy I bring to aftercare support too. If something feels off, I’d rather you reach out early.
Usually normal
- Tightness, dryness, light flaking
- Mild sensitivity to heat or wind
- A temporary “pink” look
Reach out to me
- Burning that doesn’t calm down with gentle moisturizer
- Blistering or worsening swelling
- Anything that worries you enough to keep checking the mirror

If you’re coming from Aurora, Glendale, Edgewater, Lakewood, Englewood, or Thornton, I’ll keep scheduling easy so you can pop in along I-25 or Colorado Blvd. And if you’re already near East Colfax or City Park, it’s simple to plan a quick follow-up around your week.

If you booked after searching “facials near me” or “facial spa near me, ” I want you to feel taken care of before you even walk in. Chemical peels can support acne, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and anti-aging goals, and a series often gives the best cumulative change over time. Aftercare is what protects that momentum.

Quick aftercare FAQs I hear every week in Denver
How soon can I wear makeup after a chemical peel or enzyme peel?
I usually recommend waiting at least 24 hours, and longer if your skin feels tight, looks flaky, or gets easily red. If you do wear makeup, keep it light, avoid heavy fragrance, and remove it gently at night. If you’ve got an event, tell me your date and I’ll help you time your peel so you’re not peeling on the big day.
Can I exercise, sweat, or go to the gym after a chemical peel?
For the first 48 to 72 hours, I generally want you avoiding heavy sweating and heat. Sweat, friction, and hot environments can sting and prolong irritation. Light movement is usually fine if you stay cool and keep your face clean. When you go back to full workouts, cleanse gently after and reapply sunscreen if you’re heading outside.
When will my skin start peeling and how long does peeling usually last?
Some people don’t visibly peel much, especially after enzyme treatments. If you do peel, it commonly starts around day 2 to 3 and settles by the end of the week. The big rule is don’t pick. Keep moisturizing and let it release on its own.
Do I need a special sunscreen after a chemical peel in Denver?
In Denver, I’m strict about sunscreen because altitude increases UV intensity and our air is dry. You don’t need anything fancy, but you do need consistency. I prefer a mineral SPF 30+ during peel week because it tends to be gentler on sensitive, freshly treated skin. Apply every morning and reapply when you’re outside.
Are enzyme peels gentler than chemical peels and does aftercare differ?
Enzyme peels are often gentler and can be a great choice for reactive skin, but the aftercare rules are almost the same: keep skin cool, avoid actives, protect with mineral SPF, and don’t pick at any flaking. If your peel is stronger, I’ll tell you if you need a longer break from actives.
